چکیده

The consideration of biomechanical alterations due to intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is crucial for the accurate analysis of spine biomechanics. In this study, finite element (FE) models of the L4-L5 functional spinal unit with full coverage of the degeneration grades from healthy IVD to severe degeneration were developed. The effects of IVD degeneration on spine biomechanics were analyzed under physiological loading conditions using compressive forces and bending moments. Severe IVD degeneration showed lower inter-segmental rotations in flexion-extension and lateral bending, lower intradiscal pressure in all motions and higher facet joint forces in lateral bending and axial rotation in all motions versus the healthy IVD. These findings could provide fundamental information for understanding the characteristics of the biomechanical behavior of the degenerated lumbar spine.

Relationship of Facet Tropism with Degeneration and Stability of Functional Spinal Unit

PURPOSE The authors investigated the effect of lumbar facet tropism (FT) on intervertebral disc degeneration (DD), facet joint degeneration (FJD), and segmental translational motion. MATERIALS AND METHODS Using kinetic MRI (KMRI), lumbar FT, which was defined as a difference in symmetry of more than 7 degrees between the orientations of the facet joints, was investigated in 900 functional spi...

BACKGROUND To assess the correlation between lumbar disc degeneration (LDD), multifidus muscle atrophy (LMA), and facet joints degeneration in patients with L4-L5 lumbar disc herniation (LDH). METHODS Sixty patients with L4-L5 LDH diagnosed by a 1.5 T MRI scanner were enrolled in the study group and another 60 patients with non-specific back pain were enrolled in the control group. LDD, LMA, ...

Measuring Dimensions of Lumbar Intervertebral Discs in Normal Subjects

Introduction: Disc degeneration is a natural aging process characterized by changes in appearance and chemical structure of the disc. This degeneration leads to back pain. In regard to the limitation of current therapeutical methods for patients with degenerated discs, arthroplasty has been suggested as an alternative method. To manufacture artificial discs for Iranians, determining normal lumb...

Association of Rs1676486 genetic polymorphism and lumbar disc degeneration in Iranian population

Background: lumbar disc degeneration is a multifactorial degenerative disease which is affected by genetic inheritance and environmental factors. Type XI collagen is important for organization of the extracellular matrix and cartilage collagen construction. Rs1676486 is a SNP that causes the conversion of C-T, resulting in a change in the expression of the collagen 11 alpha chain. The T allele ...
